Giga has one of the largest facilities in Wallonia equipped to house and breed rodents, lagomorphs, birds, and fish for research purposes. In addition to standard animal housing facilities, the platform provides:

  1. A dedicated SPF zone (specific Pathogen Free) for the conduction of pharmaceutical grade experiments, that holds > 240 genetically modified strains of mice.
  2. The possibility to manipulate animals under biosecurity levels 1, 2 and 3. A2 facilities offer separate rooms for the manipulation of lenti/retro/adeno viruses as well as bacteria.
  3. Facilities to perform nuclear medicine experiments including the use of radio-isotopes.
  4. Dedicated facilities for surgery and microsurgery, including hoods, heated surgery tables, microscopic surgery devices and gas anesthesia.
  5. CLAMS (Comprehensive Laboratory Animal Monitoring System), a system of metabolic cages which allows for simultaneous measurement of numerous metabolic, physiological and behavioral parameters.
  6. A broad panoply of equipment for in vivo exploration including a full body CT scan with micro-irradiator, a catwalk system for studying locomotion, an in vivo imaging system for intravascular follow-up of blood cells, an ultrasound imaging system…
  7. Services for line quarantine, cryopreservation, rederivation and revitalization.

Giga-Animal facilities follow the guidelines of the EU and Belgian legislation regarding mouse housing, animal experimentation and mandatory training of people involved with the animals : all experimental procedures and protocols are reviewed and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Ethics Committee of the University of Liège (Belgium).
